LOCAL company Changshi Power has notified the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) of plans to construct, own, operate and maintain a 100-megawatt (MW) coal-fired thermal power plant in Gweru, Midlands province.

In a public notice issued on Friday, ZERA said the power generated by the plant will supply Jin Yi Enterprises to support its ferrochrome production operations.

“The project will connect to the national grid through the construction of approximately four kilometres of two Twin Wolf 132kV lines operating at the proposed Changshi 132kV substation,” reads the notice.

“These lines will tie into the Chertsey-Gweru line, complete with associated line bays.”

Meanwhile, four other private entities have also proposed to construct power plants of varying capacities to meet their energy needs.

Tobacco Processors Zimbabwe plans to build a 3,1MW solar photovoltaic plant at the corner of Auckland and Simon Mazorodze roads in Southerton, Harare. The plant will connect to the Beatrice 33/11kV Substation.

St John’s Preparatory School, St John’s College and Lancet Properties have also expressed interest in constructing solar photovoltaic plants with a capacity of 0,15 MW each on their respective properties.

These projects reflect a growing trend of private investment in renewable and conventional energy to address power shortages and meet specific industrial and institutional energy demands.
