A local non-governmental organisation, National Environmental Awareness Trust (NEAT), in conjunction with the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has called on companies in the extractive industry to mine sustainably and invest in environmentally-friendly technologies.

Addressing stakeholders attending a tree-planting ceremony in Kadoma recently, NEAT founder Mr Timothy Chizuzu, who is also Zimbabwe Miners Federation Mashonaland West chairperson, said: “I would like to encourage all miners to practice sustainable mining. Both small-to-medium and large-scale mining entities in Zimbabwe are encouraged to be sensitive to the environment and invest in projects and technologies that minimise environmental risk.”

Sanyati District EMA environmental officer Mr Knowledge Kabesa said stakeholder participation in environmental programmes is important.

“We are emphasising that they (mining companies) showcase their various green initiatives, land rehabilitation programmes and environmental compliance, with specific reference to the provisions of the National Development Strategy 1 guidelines, where necessary,” he said.
