TWENTY THREE people were arrested within a period of four hours for bribery at a roadblock along the Harare-Bulawayo highway, police have said.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the motorists offered a bribe in a bid to evade law regulations.

“On June 10, 2022, from 10am to 2pm, Police in Norton arrested 23 suspects for bribery.

“The suspects were apprehended for various traffic offences and tried to offer bribes ranging from US$2 to US$10 to police officers at a roadblock along the Harare-Bulawayo highway at the 39 km peg,” read the statement.

Over the years, the police has been blamed for accepting bribes at roadblocks from illegal commuter operators known as mushikashika.

The mushikashika operators are notorious for breaking road regulations resulting in traffic accidents.
