NEW: 10 years for stealing telecom pole

A 48-year-old Harare man has been jailed for an effective 10 years for stealing a telecommunication pole valued at $24 650 along Lytton Road, Harare. 

Karakadzai Mwashairei, who resides in Mbare, was convicted on his own plea of guilty when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Ignition Mhene. 

Prosecutor Mr Shepherd Makonde said on September 5, 2021, at around 3am, security guard Mrs Rachiel Chikomba was on duty at the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (Zesa)’s transport premises along Lytton Road when she witnessed the accused person cutting a pole carrying telecommunication wires. 

She alerted members of the public, who assisted her to apprehend the accused person and recovered a hacksaw and two pieces of the pole. 

The accused person was taken to CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit Harare.
