The Sunday Mail

My week as H-Metro reporter

Pamela Chimutsa, L6 Queen Elizabeth
The School on the Shop Floor programme gave us an opportunity to experience what it is like to be journalists by giving us QE ladies the platform to work as journalists at Herald house from the 10th to 16th of August 2016.

I was working at H-Metro as a local news reporter and I was privileged to go to the Civil Court writing stories on cases that presided there.

For me it was the best experience because I learnt how to write an article, some of which were published.

I also got the chance to interview one of the local news reporters, Munyaradzi Doma who said he’s had a fun experience ever since he joined the media fraternity in January 2010.

He also said he got the chance to meet high profile people like ministers, councillors and the vice presidents. Munyaradzi said he loved his job of being a reporter because he was passion driven and that he always keeps his eyes on the reward no matter what might try to come his way.

My colleagues and I also got the opportunity to be enlightened on the different procedures articles have to go through before being published in the papers.

We also got to learn that Herald house was part of Zimpapers which also owns Star FM as well as Diamond FM which operates in Mutare. Zimpapers own The Herald Newspaper, The Sunday Mail, Chronicle, H-Metro, B-Metro, Sunday News, Kwayedza, Manica Post, to mention but a few. We got to learn that journalism was not only for the arts people but anyone could undertake the profession as long as they were passion driven.

I can say that my experience as a journalist was enjoyable throughout the course because I got the chance to meet and work with journalists at H-Metro.I was also equipped with the knowledge on how to write a good article much thanks to my mentor Fungai Jachi who assisted me throughout the 4 day course at Herald house.I also learnt to have focus in everything that I do and I was also groomed to be punctual.

Lastly I learnt to do everything from the heart aiming my eyes on the reward and to set goals that will give me the determination to work hard to accomplish since we are now living in a world of stiff competition.
