My experience as a leader

Panashe Mukuna

I am now in my final months, rather weeks, of high school. How fast time flies!

I enrolled for Form One at Mufakose 2 High School in 2017, and became a prefect when I reached Form Four.  I had different experiences as a leader at the school.

When I was appointed a prefect, I was excited, but, at the same time, panicked.

I was a bit worried about the examinations that loomed. My worry was on how I was going to balance between my studies and leading others.

This was my first time to lead a large number of people, and of different age groups at that. I was used to being a class monitor, not a school prefect.

But my journey as a leader was not as bad as I had expected. I had acquired some leadership skills and values from the Scripture Union team, which was established after encouragement from the school.

Since I wanted to influence other students to achieve the goals set by the school, I made sure all the rules were respected and observed by every learner. However, there were some students who proved to be hard nuts to crack. They complicated the work of prefects.

Some did not dress properly while others boycotted lessons. As leaders, we took disciplinary action against them.

In some instances, other students, especially those doing A-Level, would disrespect me, as they were older than me. However, that did not stop me from performing my duties. I was determined to ensure set objectives were achieved. I was a risk taker and stood firm in my execution of duties.

It is school policy that no Lower Sixth student is appointed a prefect.  I am now an Upper Sixth student and I was once again appointed a prefect. I was also appointed sports captain and president of the Toastmasters Club, where leaders are made. I am still the leader of that club. My role as a leader now appears better than when I was doing O-Level.

The most common student misdemeanours that I have to deal with include reporting late for school, drug abuse, vandalism and stealing.

Teamwork has enabled us, the prefects, to be successful in enforcing discipline among students.

I always make sure that I perform my duties to perfection. As a prefect, I realised it was important for me to lead by example. I am proud that a lot of students look up to me.

My experience as a prefect has been memorable. Through the position, I have acquired crucial skills. I now know how to tackle various challenges presented by different personalities.
