ZAMBIAN -based players will be the third set of Zimbabwean internationals to bounce back into action among the group that is plying their trade outside of the borders with that country’s Super League expected to return to action on July 18 after months of Covid-19 induced suspension.
There are a number of players who include former Dynamos captain Ocean Mushure, Tafadzwa Rusike and Dennis Dauda who are playing in Zambia while former Warriors and Harare City strengthen and conditioning coach Thompson “Rubber man’’ Matenda is now working in the Zambian top-flight.
According to reports from Lusaka, Football; Association of Zambia president Andrew Kamanga announced the dates of the July 18 re-start amid indications that officials are hopeful with the hope that the competition can be completed in a six-week period.
Kamanga in confirming the dates also said they were for the top two divisions in the country to resume their season, with the top-flight in particular set for an intriguing finish.
No fewer than six sides are in strong contention for the title with 10 rounds remaining, though the players who can shake off the rust quicker after what will be four months without matches may determine the destination of the trophy.
Forest Rangers lead the league with 46 points from their 24 games, followed by Napsa Stars (45 from 25), Green Eagles (44 from 24), Nkana (43 from 24), Zesco United (42 from 24) and Lusaka Dynamos (40 from 25).
“Our engagement with the ministry of health who have provided us with the guidelines is continuous and whether or not fans will be allowed in due course will be a decision that will be made in consultation with the authorities,” he said.
“In the meantime, we will have to be content with viewing the matches on television through our broadcast partners.”
“The return of football is a phased approach and we are hopeful that eventually all the leagues will be concluded on the pitch subject to the authorities approving.
“Our message to the Super League and National Division One teams is that they should adhere to the guidelines availed them to ensure we duly conclude the league on the pitch.
“It will not be easy but we are confident that with commitment from everyone involved we can lead the way for others on the continent.”
While those in Zambia are ready to join the likes of Marvelous Nakamba (England) and Bruce Kangwa (Tanzania) in enjoying action, the players in the domestic Premiership still have to wait to get a clear indication when the 2020 season can finally get underway.
The domestic season was scheduled to start in March before it was shelved indefinitely.
