LOCAL tennis icon and former Mufakose Tennis Coaching Agency director Albert Nhamoyebonde was once again saluted for the sterling work he did to develop the sport.

He was accordingly honoured on his 76th birthday.

Mufakose Tennis Coaching Academy celebrated his life and achievements at the Tennis Centre yesterday.

Nhamoyebonde — a revered coach and administrator — mentored a number of players who later became prominent tennis coaches.

Some of his protégés who have turned to coaching, like Martin Dzuwa, Richmore Murape, Lazarus Manjoro and Moses Chikodzi, graced the event, where they conducted coaching courses for kids in the suburb.

About 80 kids from as young as four were taken through their paces by the coaches, something that Nhamoyebonde did religiously for over 25 years, especially in development programmes that produced talents such as the first black non-playing captain of the Zimbabwe Davis Cup team, the late Claudio Murape, and Shepherd Manyumbu, who is now a highly qualified umpire.
