WHEN budding musician Wencilus Makungisa was nicknamed Mpositori while on tour in England with choral group ZimPraise, he never knew that would become his trade name.

Makungisa, or Mpositori Wency, made his presence felt as the title track off his album “Mvura Yakawanda” entered the the Star Fm Gospel Greats Top 20 charts last month.

The nine-song debut album was launched in February 2015.

But for the 26-year-old Makungisa, the name Mpositori has a deeper meaning in his ministry.

“I was discovered by the founder of ZimPraise Joseph Madziyire while in England. While introducing me to the audience he said, ‘uyu ndiye mpositori wedu’. So when I recorded my album I was looking for a name then I decided to adopt that name.

“I prayed and got a revelation that I needed to derive messages from the 12 Apostles. So that is what guides me,” says Makungisa.

“Mvura Yakawanda” entered the charts in May and has occupied position 14 for two weeks.

Makungisa derived the message of the song from the theme of a conference organised by Faith in God Ministries.

The Chimanimani-born said the song is a prayer to God to deal with challenges people face.

“This is a prayer asking God to release abundant rain. We are saying Lord this time give us rain so that things may go well in our homes, our work places. People have degrees but they don’t have jobs. An appeal for God’s blessing inspired this song,” he adds.

A scriptwriter and music director with Shift Solutions, Makungisa has worked as a backing vocalist with gospel musicians Bethany Pasinawako, Taurai Gordon Nzira, Kudzi Nyakudya and Sebastian Magacha among others.

Born in a family of six, Makungisa began his music career with ZimPraise in 2006 and said he desires that worship be about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“I love worshipping according to the word of God and that is my main thrust. People shouldn’t have a culture when it comes to worship. But rather that we ask God if that is what He wants through prayer and guidance from pastors,” the musician says.

From the album, he singles out “Kurudzira Mwana Wako” as his favourite.

“This appeals to elderly people to teach their children in the way they should go so that when they are grown they will not depart from it.”

His album is found on i-Tunes, CD Baby, Googleplay and Buddie – beatz.
