WILLIAM Masvinu, a six-time winner of the Mr Ugly competition, believes he has what it takes to reclaim the title should the contest be revived as planned.

The Mr Ugly title is bestowed on the country’s supposedly ugliest man.

“We are currently engaging various stakeholders as we work on the revival of this competition. This contest is as important as any other pageants,” said founder of the competition, David Machowa, who is also known as Apama.

Masvinu’s bitter rival Mison Sere, who won the title twice, is confident that his ugliness is unmatched.

The quaint competition was last held in 2017.

The Sunday Mail Society caught up with Masvinu at Mbare Musika bus terminus, where he is a tout.

“I am always ready. All I am waiting for is that phone call inviting me to take part in the competition,” said the reigning champion, who was clad in a colourful shirt and brown trousers.

As has always been the case, he is “proud” of his appearance.

“It is a known fact that I am the ugliest man in Zimbabwe and probably the whole world. I wish the Mr Ugly competition was a global one. I wanted to lift the country’s flag high.”

Apart from showing the world how ugly he is, he is also attracted by the competition’s winning purse.

“In 2017, I won US$600 and to me that was a lot of money. I used the winnings wisely, buying household items. I wish to lay my hands on that kind of money again,” he said.

Sere, who beat Masvinu to the crown in 2015 and 2016, vowed to repeat that impressive feat.

“I beat him twice and I can still do it. I am naturally ugly and the title will surely be mine if it is going to be re-introduced,” the Mabvuku-based Sere said.

His baldness and gaping teeth, he added, would sway the judge’s decisions in his favour.

“Look at me. I am bald and toothless. I am the ugliest person in the land and the judges will surely come to such a conclusion.

“I am penniless and as you can see … In the event that the competition is re-introduced, I will win it and use part of the cash prize to buy one or two clear beers.”
