Three days after turning 32, Lot Chiwunga had the opportunity to mark his return from suspension and back in Black Rhinos colours in style.

This was during a routine pre-season friendly against newly-promoted side Mushowani Stars, early last month, and scoring on his return to the fold would have made the ideal belated birthday present.

But sadly, the football gods conspired to ruin Chiwunga’s day as the 32-year-old fell victim to a vicious tackle from two Mushowani Stars players, inside the penalty area box, leaving the forward with a double fracture on his right fibula and tibia.

“My last game was against Nichrut, and I was already thinking of what kind of celebration I would do to befitting  my birthday,” he said.

“I remember that after receiving the cross, I had clear sight of the goal and at that moment what came to mind was how I was going celebrate.

“After all its not every day one turns 32.

“What I remember next was me on the ground holding my right leg and in excruciating pain,” said Chiwunga.

It should be noted that this was the same leg Chiwunga injured back in 2016, making this day one the worst days in his entire life.

“At first I thought it was a minor injury, but once the doctors said I need more tests, I feared the worst,” he said.

His fears were confirmed not long after as the tests confirmed that he had sustained a double fracture on his right leg, an injury likely to send him back on the side-lines for some time.

But that was then.

Now Chiwunga is in a better space and he well on the recovery path.

And the 32-year-old, being the spiritual person he is, owes much of this to his mother, Reverend Katifa Banda, for her guidance both on the physical and spiritual plane.

“I remember after receiving the bad news, that I will be out of action for some time, I turned to my mother for some spiritual guidance.

“She gave me lots of support and guidance.

“It was at that time that she advised me to visit my spiritual fathers, Prophet Walter Magaya together with Apostle Trymore Emmanuel who helped reaffirm my faith and told me to put everything in God’s hands.

“Now, I’m happy to report that I have made tremendous inroads in my recovery,” he said.

Only last week, Chiwunga went for his routine check-up at Roland Square Chambers, where his doctor Didymus Mutero gave him more good news.

“I have just been told that I can start light training as early as March, and will most likely make my comeback during the second half of the season,” said Chiwunga.

As he reaches the twilight of his career Chiwunga is not losing hope on his dream of bagging the Premiership Golden Boot Award.

“I think I have achieved almost everything that I have always wanted,” he said.

“However, amongst my ultimate goals, I have just managed to achieve one, which was to carry on my father’s legacy.

“Now, I have set my sights on winning the Golden Boot Award, something I hope to achieve before hanging up my boots,” said Chiwunga.
