“AND he said, ‘Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord’. In all this Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.” Job 1:21-22 English Standard Version (ESV)

I saw miracle smiles on the faces of the Lwanga Secondary School students after Cyclone Idai ravaged the Eastern Highlands.

The images of the students strolling hand in hand with their back packs gave me renewed expectation of how God can sustain the inner joy that neither crumbling walls could destroy nor mud slides conceal.

I wondered how the heart lets out smiles in the middle of a disaster and I only realised that nothing other than resilience drove the children to travel on foot to find a safe place.

I was down trying to think of what will become of their future. But no, God has something powerful and testimonies to reveal out of these disasters. I saw them as victims, but they walked like survivors — these are survivors. We may in the same vein try to picture Job as a victim but His ultimate trust in God proves us wrong.

Amid the sorry state he gathers courage to declare some praises to God. Unlike our responses during crises, Job did not charge God with any wrong doing but he instead puts his trust more in God.

I believe young people are testifying all the way for being saved from the calamities of Idai.

My brothers and sisters, God remains who He is during chaos. Chaos does not change the character of God nor diminish the reality of God but amplifies it.

Fellow Zimbabweans, may we remain resilient and trusting God in the aftermath of Cyclone Idai. Let us plead for the healing of the survivors.

We may be crushed but your presence has saved us. We shall forever trust in your name Lord Jesus and no calamity shall diminish our trust in God.

Amen!
