IDs for cyclone victims soon

Government will soon dispatch teams to assist victims of Cyclone Idai in Chimanimani and Chipinge acquire identification documents, many of which were washed away by floods.

The cyclone claimed at least 344 lives while about 154 people have not yet been accounted for.

The deadly weather pattern saw villagers lose valuables worth several millions of dollars including national identification cards, birth and death certificates and passports.

In an interview, Minister of State for Manicaland Province Affairs Dr Ellen Gwaradzimba said although Government was still concentrating on relief aid, the issue of national identity documents to the victims was top priority.

“We had a meeting with the registrar general and we have plans to assist people acquire national registration documents as soon as the situation is stable,” she said.

“Quite a number of the victims have come to us seeking assistance on how they may get new identity documents, hence, with the Registrar General, we have agreed to deploy members from his office to the affected districts.

“Due to the situation in the areas, it is not viable for people to come to the provincial registrar’s office, therefore, the Government will open temporary offices in all districts that have been affected.

Manicaland provincial registrar Mrs Joyce Munamati said they were planning to move into the affected area to assist the victims.

“We have planned on how we can assist the victims and we hope to move in soon because the situation is getting better,” she said.

“We are ready to help the victims get national registration documents in time as it is their right.”
