SEASONED promoter Josphat “Big Josh” Hozheri will in a fortnight officially launch an ambitious weekly event dubbed “Executive Sungura Night” in the capital.
The show, which has been test-running for a while, is aimed at creating an intimate platform for the well-to-do members of society to attend sungura gigs.

According to Hozheri, sungura is loved by members of different social strata, but the “executives” rarely find conducive platforms to enjoy live performances.

“I have noticed that some members of the upper class have the desire to attend sungura gigs but are deterred by venues in which the shows are held. Therefore, I have crafted the ‘Executive Sungura Night’ with them in mind. It is and will be a suits and heels affair,” said Hozheri.

The “Executive Sungura Night” is held every Thursday at Time and Jazz Café, which is situated at Cresta Oasis.

Rising sungura musician, Romeo Gasa, headlines the event.

He is joined by guest sungura artistes every week to spice up the occasion.

“It is more like a Romeo and friends affair. We invite different sungura artistes to join him. The idea is to make sure that every sungura artiste gets an opportunity to showcase their skill to a unique crowd,” says Big Josh.

“The response has been encouraging thus far. Revellers that come usually suggest artistes they want to see in action and we respond by inviting them. We are trying to make sungura cut barriers. People should know that it is not only a ghetto or rural genre, sungura is played even in leafy suburbs.”

The event will be officially launched on November 23.

Newly appointed Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs Webster Shamu is expected to be the guest of honour. Minister Shamu is known for his passion for arts and has been instrumental in developing a lot of careers.

“We want Minister Shamu to grace the event. He is from the same province with Romeo and has in the past played a crucial role in supporting the young crooner,” said Hozheri.

Gasa adds, “The event is indeed exposing us to a new clientele. We play for new faces on a weekly basis but at the same time we are happy that we are retaining most of them. It shows we are shoving in the right direction.”

Meanwhile, socialite and events management guru, Wanisayi “Mahwindo” Mutandwa will tonight celebrate her 41st birthday at The Volt Club along Samora Machel in the capital.

Dubbed “Ripped Jeans and Shirt Party”, the celebration is expected to be graced by soccer legends, administrators, fashion gurus, events management personalities, business executives, artistes and music promoters, among others.

Sungura maestro Alick “Baba Sharo” Macheso will be the guest speaker.

“It is always good to add another year in life and I thank God for the mercy. The birthday celebrations start around 8pm at The Volt Club where we anticipate a full house as has become the norm over the years,” says Mahwindo.

The socialite’s celebrations will be more like an after party for the Warriors legends versus Barcelona legends match that takes place this afternoon at the National Sports Stadium.
