Four occupants of a Honda Fit vehicle perished, while the driver was seriously injured on Friday evening in a horrific head-on collision on a sharp curve just after Gweru.

The driver of the small vehicle, who was reportedly speeding, had encroached into the lane of the oncoming truck while trying to overtake two vehicles.

When our Midlands Bureau arrived at the scene around 5.40pm, Gweru City firefighters and military police were cutting up the Honda Fit to retrieve the bodies, which were still trapped under the haulage truck.

Police national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the deceased were taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital, while the Honda Fit driver was in a critical condition.

“I confirm the accident which occurred just outside Gweru, killing four on the spot this (Friday) evening. The driver of the Honda Fit is said to be in critical condition,” he said.

The driver of the haulage truck, Mr Donald Hapararwi, who was unscathed, said he tried to move further to the left to give room to the driver of the Honda Fit.

“It happened in the blink of an eye. It is a sharp bend, so I saw the car when it was about 50 metres away. He had already passed one vehicle and was trying to overtake yet another one on the bend.

“There was not enough space to manoeuvre so as I tried to push a little bit far left, and as fate would have it, he decided to also go further right, resulting in the head-on collision,” he said.

The mangled shell of the Honda Fit was resultantly lodged under the haulage truck’s engine.
