HEALTH: Reducing cancer risk

Legumes provide abundant protein and fibre and also contain very little fat and no cholesterol

Eat a variety of raw vegetables daily

Mostly steam, stew or bake your food

Cut down on frying, braais/grilling, avoid reusing cooking oil

Never eat burnt meat; use foil for braaing

Use more herbs and less salt

Keep a diary of what you eat

Drink six to eight glasses of clean water daily

Avoid fizzy, sweetened drinks, take fruit or dilutable juices

Limit alcohol intake; alcohol increases risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colon, rectum and breast

Take tea that contains anti-oxidants

Lifestyle choices such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, obesity, tobacco use and alcohol intake are associated with increased cancer risks
