Harare City Council has embarked on a multi-million-dollar project to install solar street lights and a pilot project is now running in the Central Business District.

Town Clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi said this while presenting the city’s upgraded service delivery plans at a one-day service delivery and results-based management workshop organised by the Office of the President and Cabinet in Harare on Tuesday.

Dr Mahachi said Town House has already secured a partner for the project, which also includes rehabilitating conventional street lights.

“We have begun installing solar street lights in the CBD and have done the entirety of Robert Mugabe Avenue, from Rotten Row going North-East.

“We hope this project will restore a shine to the city.”

Harare’s street lights have broken down over the years due to vandalism and failure by the authorities to repair them.

This has resulted in more and more criminals unleashing muggings under the cover of darkness.
