CONSERVATIONISTS have hailed the Government’s latest push to protect wetlands and encouraged Harare residents, particularly those that live in the Manyame catchment areas of Glen View, Budiriro, Highfields and Kuwadzana, to also play their part.

The Manyame Conservation Trust – a conservational mouthpiece that advocates the preservation of water sources – said it was “fully behind the Government on its stance on wetlands”.

In a statement, the Trust’s chairperson, Linah Matenda, indicated that cities were under siege from lawlessness by corrupt office bearers and unruly politicians.

“A new scourge of wetland invasions has exposed residents to flooding and is among the major factors leading to the current water crisis in Harare,” reads part of the statement by the trust.

The trust’s drive is to advocate the preservation of water sources through community involvement in rehabilitation and maintenance of the local environment.

The community-based organisation also has a wetland management plan for Harare’s Glen View suburb.
