SHE went for a short walk with her family on Christmas Day and after returning home she looked for the heater.

A chilly Christmas is novel for Felisitus Kwangwa.

Ordinarily, her festive season is usually marked by a big family gathering in Bikita, where a beast is often slaughtered.

Well, this time around it was Christmas in Surrey for the 25-year-old Zimbabwe netball team captain.

“We went for a walk on a hill with my family here, the Duncans.

“It wasn’t too far; it is just behind our place.

“Afterwards, I went straight to my room to catch some warmth. I was feeling cold so I needed a heater,” said Kwangwa with a chuckle.

“Later on, we went for dinner and I got a present from my family.”

She might be far away from home, but she is certainly feeling the love from her new family.

“I am adjusting well to the lifestyle and I am glad I have great people here, from my family to my teammates.

“I obviously get a lot of love and check-ups from family and beloved ones back in Zimbabwe, and I am grateful.

“On Christmas Day I also had a long call with family in Zimbabwe,” said the goal defender.

It has been a month in the United Kingdom for the new Surrey Storm signing, but she is yet to make an official debut.

“Sadly, we didn’t play in the festival (Netball’s Rise Again Festival) after some issues, but I will keep working hard preparing for my official debut,” said Kwangwa.

Surrey Storm pulled out of the festival last week after a Covid-19 case from a Saracens Mavericks player a few days after the two teams’ friendly match.

For many, 2020 will be remembered for sad chapters mainly because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but for Kwangwa there is a silver lining to the year.

“Obviously, it has been a hard year for most of us; Covid-19 has affected almost everything.

“But on a personal level, I am grateful to have made a breakthrough in my netball career. When the year started, I didn’t think I would be here.

“I hope things will be normal soon and we can all do the things we love.”
