Evolution of fashion – the Maison Du Style chronicles!

TALK OF THE TOWN with Kimberly Mhembere

IT is often argued that fashion is universal; a language spoken, and understood, by all.

Or as English philosopher Francis Bacon once put it “fashion is only the attempt to realise art in living forms and social intercourse”.

After what seems to be a lifetime, the change and influence of fashion is yet to be explained.

Trends have been introduced, owing some form of origin to pop culture here and there.

Others have simply just come and gone, and then come back again, without so much as an explanation or pattern.

Once in a while, political attitudes have even been reported to have contributed to a trend or change.

However, the Zimbabwe fashion story is one yet to be fully told.

Among some of the more notable international influencers to have come and gone include the likes of Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent Christian Dior and Marc Jacobs.

Locally, one cannot go without mentioning the likes of Pokello Nare, Zaregusia, Posh and Ivhu Tribe.

But, the one name that looks destined to join the aforementioned icons, and is fast rising in both clout and success, is Lorraine Swanepoel.

Popularly known as Maison Du Style, this 28-year-old fashionista is an icon on the rise, and credits French ideologies and lessons during her high school days for her unique sense of style.

It probably goes a long way to explain her moniker Maison Du Style, which is pronounced May- Zon Do- Steel.

“The name resonates with who I am, and I am driven by the French culture,” said the 28-year-old fashion designer.

“I am heavily inspired by my mother; she has always been there for me, and is my rock,’’ she said.

In a male-dominated industry that focuses on making everyday clothing, Maison is sure to break barriers.

Her client list includes the Boity, Jah Prayzah,Mr Eazi, Patoraking , Ex Q and Ammara Brown.

“The networks are part of the reason why I am a big brand today.’

“Maison Du Style defines fashion as a way one feels, and not just how one dresses.

“It comes from within.”

‘Comfort’ is the first word that comes to mind when one thinks of her distinct signature.

Maison Du Style clothing seems to be all about comfort and wrapping oneself in clothing that depicts one’s identity.

That comfort creates the illusion of permanence.

She does not only major in producing high-end clothing, but also street wear that one can find comfort in.

Her latest collection ‘Shell’ was launched six months ago and has been a big hit with women because it embraces body positivity regardless of shape and size.

“The free spirit in me genuinely does not fear experimenting with fabrics.

“The best part about fashion designing is I get to play around with fabrics, and I try to market my clothing in a way that always reaches my profit margins.

“I have a niche market, and I make clothes for those that run way from ordering clothes online because it’s a hustle.

“I am inspired by what I see people in, and I try to envision and draw unique pieces that best compliment their needs and taste.

“It’s very rare to find other designers with my form of style,’’ she said.
