Government plans to introduce electronic driver’s licences in line with its vision to adopt e-governance systems and also align with regional standards.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Deputy Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Mike Madiro said the plans are at an advanced stage.

“Madam Speaker, the developments in transport management have led us to the upgrading of the existing driver’s licence to an electronic driver’s licence.  This is in line with the SADC Protocol on Transport, Communications and Meteorology on Harmonisation of Road Transport Standards and Systems. Once finalised, the electronic driver’s licence will contain the driver’s information linking it to the ZIMTIS (Zimbabwe Management Transport Information System),” he said.

Once introduced, this will allow a centralised management of the transport system in the country.

“The ministry began a roll-out of the computerisation and integration of transport management in Zimbabwe. This is a major project designed to manage the transport sector, particularly the registration and licensing of vehicles and drivers.”

In addition to the licences, Deputy Minister Madiro added, there will be a computerisation of garage inspection, where information on a vehicle’s fitness will be stored electronically.
