UNITED Kingdom-based Healthcare Agency MD Chipo Ruhukwa is making waves on the international culinary scene.
The Zimbabwe-born entrepreneur recently launched her homemade condiments, Easy Peasy, in Harare. Condiments include food items like salt, mustard and pickle used to impart a specific flavour or complement dishes.

Easy Peasy is a range of pre-prepared chopped, sliced and ready-to-go cooking ingredients that help chefs and other foodies prepare tasty meals quickly and with less fuss.

The food, music and wine event was highly attended by chefs, food buffs and socialites, with celebrities that include Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana and Jah Prayzah among others, in attendance.

Star FM radio personality Richard Kohola, affectionately known as RK, was the host at the ceremony where guests had a taste of the food prepared using Easy Peasy and served with a range of sauces.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Society, Ruhukwa said she was happy with the launch as everything went according to plan.

“My love for cooking and good food inspired me to do this range. I love cooking but find all the prepping and peeling and chopping a tedious process, so these products make it so much easier.

“Our range includes chopped garlic, chopped ginger and chopped chillies. They include our delicious, very popular lemon and herb sauce – mild, hot and our extra hot sauces guaranteed to blow one’s socks off,” she boasted.

She said besides being tasty, the condiments are also healthy replacements for some products used in preparing food.

“I love to cook, and thoroughly enjoy making healthy and tasty meals for my family but I found that with my busy schedule, I was finding less time in the kitchen. Having lived abroad where these products are readily available, I thought of introducing these easy ways to cook to the Zimbabwean market, hence the name Easy Peasy. Forget peeling, chopping, preparing – and just cook!”

Ruhukwa said that many condiments, such as mustard or ketchup, are available in single-serving packets.

“The diner usually applies them, but they are sometimes added prior to serving, for example, in a sandwich made with ketchup, mustard or mayonnaise. Some condiments are used during cooking to add flavour or texture; barbecue sauce, compound butter, teriyaki sauce, soy sauce, and marmite and sour cream are examples,” she said.

So how are these condiments made?

“Ours handmade in our small family run factory on a farm just outside of Harare. We blend lots of different flavours. The oils are slowly infused with herbs and spices using our special techniques. Most importantly they are all locally made with no artificial additives or preservatives,” she said.

She added that she owes her success to her parents.

“My role models are my parents. They have always encouraged me to aim for the sky and never give up on my dream no matter how difficult life gets.

Growing up, I watched them build an empire from a little two plate stove in our tiny kitchen at home. And never ever did I hear either one of them say ‘this is too difficult, I give up’,” she said.
