AMBITIOUS Golden Eagles bounced back to winning ways when they overcame Chegutu Pirates in a Northern Region Division One League encounter at Ellis Robins School in Harare yesterday.

After suffering a 3-1 loss at the hands of Simba Bhora in Shamva on the opening weekend of the season, Golden Eagles took control of the game with an early first-half goal.

They found the target through Albert Nyamutsaka after nine minutes before Henry Manatsa ensured safety just after the hour mark.

The team is under the tutelage of former Zimbabwe international Joel Luphahla, who was happy to bag his first three points of the season.

“The game was not so clean for us the way we know we can play football, but I am happy that we managed to collect three points.

“We managed to keep a clean sheet in our first home game and it has given us confidence ahead of another tough match against Mambas.

“We are trying to groom new young players for the national team and there is need for the young players to be in the spotlight,’’ Lupahla said.

The home team enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but could not turn their dominance into goals.

Chegutu Pirates coach Richard Chunga felt lack of endurance was their biggest undoing.

“The game was a good game. We played against an organised opponent; we lacked endurance and we had poor match tactics.

“My forwards were not able to get hold of the ball to allow our midfield to join them in the attacking third.

“Going forward, we have to work on these areas and we have to be better than what we did today,” said Chunga.

In other matches, Commando Bullets and Come Again played a one-all draw, while the match between Harare City Cubs and PAM ended goalless.
