Detective Bosch stands test of time

Andrew Moyo Beyond The Cover —
IN 1992, Michael Connelly introduced the literary world to Detective Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch in his bestseller “The Black Echo”, with the character subsequently appearing in many more of his novels.

Close to 25 years after his literary birth, Bosch is among one of the most popular characters in American crime fiction.

Having read my fair share of Connelly’s books, I love how he has managed to keep Bosch fresh for such a long time without losing any of his dark, gritty charm.

The most recent novel in the Bosch series, “The Wrong Side of Goodbye”, was released late last year and is testament to Connelly’s genius.

Although, the detective is now retired, he still offers his services as a private investigator.

While he does not advertise or even have an office, credentials accumulated over 30 years in the police force are enough to attract the attention of a billionaire in need of his investigative expertise.

Whitney Vance, who is about to die, sets Bosch on the trail to find someone who may never have existed. How about that for a hook?

Besides this assignment, Bosch — who still has the stomach for chasing tough criminals — volunteers as a reserve detective for the understaffed San Fernando Police Department where he works on a case dubbed “Screen Cutter”, a nickname of a serial rapist on the loose.

Connelly is a master storyteller with the ability to grip his audience with a plot that keeps you glued to your seat as you burn with curiosity. The way the pieces of the puzzle fall into place is vintage crime fiction writing.

From the cases Bosch chases down to his often bleak personal life, here is a character you can fall in love with.

He is your classic flawed hero, the brooding, ascerbic detective who is still trying to figure out who he is despite often thinking he has finally discovered himself.

“The Wrong Side of Goodbye” is the 19th offering in the Bosch series and while it might not be as brilliant as some of the more powerful entries, it still packs a punch.

This is a must read for Connelly followers and anyone interested in crime fiction.
