Date for by-elections for Glen View South and Mangwe set

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has, in terms of Section 39(2) of the Electoral Act (Chapter 2:13), proclaimed September 7, 2019 as the date for National Assembly by-elections for Glen View South and Mangwe constituencies.

The Nomination Courts will seat on July 26, 2019.

The seat for Glen View South fell vacant following the death of MDC-Alliance’s Honourable Vimbai Tsvangirai-Java who succumbed to injuries she sustained in a road accident.

She died on June 10.

Honourable Obedingwa Mguni who was Zanu-PF representative for Mangwe constituency passed away after a short illness at West End Clinic on June 18, 2019.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Advocate Jacob Mudenda, notified President Mnangagwa on June 24, 2019 in writing of the two vacancies that had arisen.

In Proclamation 3 of 2019 published in an Extraordinary Government Gazette Friday, President Mnangagwa said: “Now, therefore, under and by virtue of powers vested in me, as President as afore said, I do, by this proclamation; (a) order a new election for the constituency of Glen View South; and (b) fix, Friday July 26, 2019, as the date on which the nomination court shall sit, commencing at 10am at the Magistrates’ Court, Rotten Row, Harare, for the purpose of receiving nomination of candidates for election as a member of the National Assembly Constituency for Glen View South; and

(b) fix, Saturday September 7, 2019, as the day on which a poll shall be taken if a poll becomes necessary in terms of section 46(17)(c) of the Electoral Act[Chapter 2:]

(b) fix, Saturday September 7, 2019, as the day on which a poll shall be taken if a poll becomes necessary in terms of section 46(17)(c) of the Electoral Act[Chapter 2:]

At the time of his death, Honourable Mguni was Zanu-PF deputy chief whip in the National Assembly and Secretary for Finance for Matebeleland South while Honourable Tsvagirai-Java was incoming Women Assembly Secretary General for the MDC-Alliance.
