THE Northern Region Division One Soccer League has become the latest casualty of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The league was forced to call off five of their Match Day 4 games, which had been scheduled for this weekend.

Simba Bhora, which is being affected for the second consecutive time, had a match with Black Mambas deferred, while Karoi’s date with Pam was also shelved.

Ngezi Under-19 were supposed to go up against Chegutu Pirates, while CUMA Academy had a date against BETA XI.

The final match to be called off was the Commando Bullets and Golden Valley clash.

NRSL representative Sweeney Mushonga described the situation as an ‘unfortunate development’, but one precipitated by the rise in Covid-19 cases.

“Obviously the players and the technical teams are a priority to us, and we have to protect them at all costs.

“We hope to come up with health protocols which will help us in protecting our teams, and implement them all next year after our break.

“All the teams affected have an average of seven players with active cases, with Karoi United having the highest number of eight players.

“All the affected teams will play their matches early next year, just before we resume our normal Match Day Five games,” said Mushonga.

Only four games were not affected by the surge in Covid-19 cases.

On Friday, Harare City Clubs successfully hosted Chinhoyi Stars at Motor Action, with the game ending in a 1-nil win for Chinhoyi Stars.

Yesterday, Banket FC and Come Again shared the spoils in a goalless draw, while Golden Eagles beat Trojan FC 1-0 at Ellis Robins High School.

Eagles got their goal from Claude Mapoka.

Today Zim Young Soccer Academy will entertain Herentals U20 FC at Motor Action.

The league then will take a break for the Christmas and New Year holidays, returning during the early weeks of January.
