Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Minister Kirsty Coventry has urged the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC), Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) and all National Sport Associations (NSA) to work together to improve local sport.

Speaking at the official opening of the ongoing three-day ZOC 2021-2025 Strategic Planning Workshop on Friday, Minister Coventry said the future of sport lies in the hands of all its stakeholders.  “Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation, SRC, ZOC and all national sport associations must work together for the development of our sport,” she said. She said the strategic planning workshop had to be used as an opportunity to correct past mistakes. Overall, the workshop is expected to shape the future of sport and create a roadmap towards the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

More than 40 delegates from different stakeholders are attended the three-day gathering.

ZOC president Thabani Gonye said there was need to take stock of the state of local sport and come up with ways to make it better.

“We need to do some self-introspection, analyse the state of sport in the country and the operating environment, to find lasting integrated solutions to actual or potential challenges we face,” he said.

“We need to tap into opportunities and our strengths so that we can achieve our set strategic objectives in the short, medium and long term. “This strategic plan will act as a compass  . . . towards its shared vision in making decisions on allocating its resources to athletes and member federations.

“We will ensure that it is implemented to the letter, with controls, monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.”
