HARARE City and ZPC Kariba face contrasting fortunes today as they seek to outdo each other to secure the last of the quarter-final slots in the Chibuku Super Cup soccer tournament.

For ZPC Kariba, the fate of qualifying for the last eight is not in their hands, while City still have control of their destiny in the two breakfast matches (kick-off 11am) at different venues.

Lloyd Chitembwe’s men must win against runaway Group One leaders, Dynamos, whom they face at Baobab Stadium, while ZPC Kariba have all to do in their date against CAPS United at the National Sports Stadium.

The Sunshine Boys, who faltered last weekend when losing 3-0 to Herentals, need two points to be sure of qualification, which will make results of ZPC Kariba’s game against CAPS United academic.

But should Harare City slump to Dynamos and ZPC Kariba overcome CAPS United, it is the electricity men who will advance to the quarter-finals. For a club that has been in the final of the Chibuku Super Cup more than any other top-flight side, Harare City will be looking to continue with their fine history in the tournament.

It is also something that Chitembwe is aware of.

“Going into this match, I know what we want and everyone at the club knows what is required, and there is no one who can tell us better of what is wanted when we play this crucial tie against Dynamos,” said Chitembwe.

It will not be an easy task for City as they face an undefeated Dynamos, who will seek to end the group matches without a dent.

“Dynamos have been in splendid form and you have to give it to Tonde (Ndiraya) for the job he has done with the team.

“Inasmuch as the task of qualifying won’t be an easy one, we are ready and well prepared for the match.

“It is very exciting to find ourselves in the position we are, playing for something in the last match of the group stage and still standing a chance to qualify for the quarter-finals.

“We have come a long way. Some people did not believe us some seven to eight months ago. As coach, I am happy with the progress that the boys have made as we look at the bigger picture, which is the league,” added Chitembwe.

ZPC Kariba gaffer Godfrey Tamirepi is leaving it to the football gods to determine their fate.

“We are faced with two situations going into this match: The first one is that we want to win the match and the second situation is that the fate of qualifying to the quarter-finals does not lie in our hands.

“We are going into the match looking for maximum points, but again, our qualification rests with the result of the Dynamos versus Harare City match,” said Tamirepi.

The tie between the two sides has rekindled memories of 2014 for ZPC Kariba.

In that year, the team, which was then under the guidance of Saul Chaminuka, seemed primed to claim the Premiership championship, as they went into the final day of the season leading the log standings.

But they lost to CAPS United at Gwanzura Stadium, while across town at the National Sports Stadium Kalisto Pasuwa’s DeMbare came from behind to overcome How Mine and clinch the title.

“CAPS United spoiled our party in 2014 and they are in a position to spoil it again.

“Memories of that match are still fresh in our minds and as we find ourselves in a similar position, we know what to expect, but we are ready for the match, though we are also seeking divine intervention for us to qualify to the next round,” added Tamirepi.
