A NEWLY FORMED 16-team netball league has brought excitement and opportunities for women in Chitungwiza.
The Chitungwiza Heart Netball League is the first organised netball competition in the dormitory town, which is famed for producing a host of netball stars, some of whom have gone on to excel for the national team.
Principal sport and recreation officer for Chitungwiza in the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Tawanda Chikono has described the league as a game-changer.
“We are quite happy as a ministry to have women participating in netball here in Chitungwiza. This is a platform for ladies to showcase their talent, network and also share ideas,” said Chikono.
The league is sponsored by Prophetic Healing Deliverance Ministries founder Walter Magaya, who also hails from Chitungwiza.
Yesterday, the participating teams clashed in a bubble at the Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex.
“The league will go a long way in curbing social vices like drug abuse and early marriages. We are in the process of registering the league, but action has begun,” said Chikono.
The 16 teams whose players were on show include Chitown City, United Vipers, 5 Stars, Chitown Queens, Moonlight, Kafera, Super Angel, United Empires, Kingdom Stars, YW4ED, Silent Strikers, Blue Queens, St Agnes, Anathoty and Kwin Queens.
Kingdom Stars captain Shalin Dziteya hailed Magaya for providing a platform for women in Chitungwiza to play some competitive netball.
“As women, we face a lot of challenges and sometimes we feel like we need to refresh. With netball, we can entertain ourselves and also socialise.
“We have a lot of talented netball players in Chitungwiza and I believe this could be their chance to showcase their talent and possibly get a call up in the national team.
“We applaud Magaya for coming up with this idea,” said Dziteya.
