Chitungwiza Municipality, buoyed by a $1,5 million allocation from Treasury, has already activated plans to drill at least 35 boreholes and rehabilitate existing ones to make the resource available to increasingly desperate ratepayers.

The local authority’s finance director, Mrs Evangelista Machona told The Sunday Mail that the boreholes will cover all the 25 wards.

“The council is very much aware of the water crisis being faced by residents. In 2019, Treasury allocated $1,5 million under the Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) fund to Chitungwiza Municipality to cater for emergency cases like water and sewer,” said Mr Machona.

“The $1,5 million is going to be used to drill boreholes in all the 25 wards under our municipality. We have 25 wards and each ward is going to benefit at least one borehole.”

Work on engaging a contractor is presently underway.
