PROMISING bodybuilder Brighton Chirwa, who recently won the Mr Mufakose title, says he is aiming higher.

The 22-year-old brushed aside the challenge from 19 other title contenders. He came third in the 2023 edition of the same competition. He impressed the judges with his big, well-defined and proportionally built physique.

Chirwa, who was the crowd favourite during the contest, chronicled his path to glory.

“In 2023, I failed to win this title and I started working on my weaknesses immediately after the competition,” he said.

After a year of hard work, the result showed. With the Mr Mufakose title in the bag, Chirwa is now concentrating on the Fitness Physique, a much-tougher competition. Chirwa is confident he will win.

“In 2023, I competed in this competition and took third position. I have been working on my weaknesses and I am sure that I will win this time around,” he said.

Chirwa said he will not take part in this year’s edition of the Mr Zimbabwe title because he did not want “to rush things”.

“I am taking one step at a time. After winning the Fitness Physique, I will then focus on the 2025 Mr Zimbabwe title,” he said.

Born and bred in Mufakose, Chirwa was inspired by Andrew “Nduza” Nyamande, a former Mr Mufakose title holder.

“Nduza lived near our home and I always admired him and wanted to be like him. One day, I asked if I could train with him and this marked the birth of my bodybuilding career,” he said.

From next week, Chirwa will be visiting local schools, teaching learners the art of bodybuilding as part of the “No to drugs” campaign being run by the Mufakose Community Gym.

Tongai Nheta, the patron of the Mufakose Community Gym, hailed Chirwa for taking time to teach bodybuilding in schools for free.

“Chirwa is a local hero. He has the interests of the community at heart.

“He is dedicating a lot of his time to using bodybuilding as a way of fighting drug and substance abuse,” he said.

“Our ‘No to drugs’ campaign is an ongoing event and we are, therefore, asking companies that do business with Mufakose residents to come forward and help with any form of donations.”

He urged individuals who were born and grew up in Mufakose, but are now spread across the nation and the world, to help their cause.

“We have people who grew up in Mufakose, who are now living in the diaspora. I am calling upon them to remember where they came from and help our cause. It is everyone’s responsibility to fight drug and substance abuse,” he said.
