China is Friday expected to unveil a US$2 million fund to support the country’s recovery from Cyclone Idai, which affected  Manicaland and parts of Masvingo provinces in March last year, The Sunday Mail Online has gathered.

China’s chief envoy to Zimbabwe, Ambassador Guo Shaochun, is scheduled to present the donation at a ceremony to be held in Harare.

The Ministers of Local Government and Public Works July Moyo, Finance and Economic Development Professor Mthuli Ncube, as well as UNDP Resident Representative Georges van Montfort are expected to grace the event, according to a notice from Government.

Cyclone Idai caused widespread damage worth an estimated $622 million.

Over 50 000 households were destroyed, directly affecting 270 000 people, including 60 000 who were displaced.

The Government has estimated that it requires US$1,1 billion to restore damaged infrastructure and livelihoods affected by the cyclone.
