THE commission of inquiry established by President Mnangagwa to investigate corporate governance failures at the Harare City Council since 2017 is set to begin holding public hearings on Monday next week.

Over the last two weeks, the commission, led by retired High Court Judge Justice Maphios Cheda, has been receiving written submissions from stakeholders.

In a statement, Justice Cheda said: “The Commission of Inquiry into the Harare City Council governance would like to inform the public and those with vested interests of the commencement of public hearings for the Commission of Inquiry.

“The public hearings will begin on June 24, 2024, at 9.30am.

“The hearings will be held at the Disaster Management Centre, Old Makombe Complex.

“Members of the public, stakeholders and interested parties are free to attend the hearings.”

The Justice Cheda commission has been tasked to probe Harare’s financial management systems, compliance with procurement laws, the management of revenue and other pertinent issues.

This comprehensive investigation seeks to shed light on the challenges plaguing the city.

The five-member commission was officially sworn in at State House last month.

Other members of the commission are Mr Steven Chakaipa, Mr Norbert Phiri, Ms Lucia Gladys Matibenga and Ms Khonzani Ncube.

Dr John Basera, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works, is secretary to the commission.
