BUILDING contractors are eager to engage Hon Felix Mhona, the recently appointed Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development with a view to appraise him of the developments in the construction sector.

Minister Mhona took over the post which was left by the late national hero Joel Biggie Matiza, whom players in the construction sector previously described as a “true champion of indigenisation”.

The Zimbabwe Building Contractors Association, (ZBCA), which represents the interests of 3 000 building contractors has expressed its willingness to work with Minister Mhona.

“As key stakeholders in his Ministry, we intend to engage the Minister and appraise him of the current state of affairs in this industry. We are also keen on discussing with him some important issues and to also air out our expectations,” Mr Petros Kagwere, the ZBCA senior vice-president said.

Among the issues that the contractors would want to discuss with the Minister is the awarding of tenders to indigenous contractors.

“One of the major issues that we would want to discuss is the awarding of tenders to local companies when it comes to big projects. We are particularly interested in projects that are related to dam construction,” Mr Kagwere said.
