Bright future for workers

The Sunday Mail

Hon Prisca Mupfumira
Tomorrow, Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in celebrating Workers’ Day.

The social partners together with Government are inviting Zimbabwean workers to this year’s commemorations being held under the theme “Improved working conditions in a growing economy”.

Government recognises the sacrifice, discipline, perseverance, commitment and, most importantly, patriotism and commitment of all its workers for a better Zimbabwe.

The 2017 Workers’ Day commemorations will be held in Mashonaland West Province at Chinhoyi stadium.

This year’s commemorations celebrate the worker as an important contributor to the economy whilst taking stock of the work that still lies ahead of us in improving working conditions.

As Government, we are not resting until we are satisfied that workers are content with their working conditions.

To this end, strides have been made in addressing workers’ plights through various initiatives like opening of the National Building Society by the National Social Security Authority, the introduction of a National Health Insurance Scheme and an enhanced funeral assistance package at no additional cost to beneficiaries.

The National Building Society is already working to address the workers’ quest for affordable housing and flexible financial solutions tailor-made just for their pockets.

A few weeks ago, we gathered in Chinhoyi to open another NBS branch, bringing the total number of branches to three. Four more branches will be opened before the end of this year.

With an economy that is on the path to recovery, Government thrives to ensure that workers have decent jobs and continue to live decent lives with the families that they sweat for.

It is our endeavour to concurrently focus on economic growth and improved industrial relations.

Our economic blueprint, the Zimbabwe Agenda for Sustainable Socio-Economic Transformation (Zim-Asset), forges towards an empowered society.

This empowered society constitutes hard-working men and women who have held on to Zimbabwe in spite of our challenges.

The economic growth projections for Zimbabwe are an indication that workers have a bright future ahead.

I urge all workers to tighten their belts for a booming economy.

This will be cemented by the strong alliance of Government and social partners as demonstrated by this unity of purpose.

We, therefore, invite all workers to come in their numbers to the 2017 May Day celebrations in Chinhoyi.

Honourable Prisca Mupfumira is the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare.
