COMMUNION with Bishop Lazarus
On my parentsai??i?? bookshelf was a thin volume called ai???Tinker, Tailor: The Myth of Cultural Deprivationai???.
It was a splendid bookshelf, holding tomes that I have never seen since. The frantic page-turning of youthful fingers, ai???borrowingai??? by friends and relatives, and moving house somewhere along the line, all led to the depletion of that mini library.
Years spent at those four shelves cultivated my love for reading. The written word still holds much power over me, and I feel a little disfigured whenever I see a defaced book.
It was there that I first met Achebe, encountered Soyinka and reveled in Mungoshi.
And there were many social sciences texts; which was a reflection of my parentsai??i?? time studying Psychology and Education.
ai???Tinker, Tailorai??? was one of those texts. I loved the title, but I could never get past the first page. The young mind needed more colour and vibrancy than psycho-social theory that may as well have been written in Greek.
As fate would have it, I was to come across ai???Tinker, Tailorai??? many years later. Our teachers at the seminary felt that we would not be fully equipped to evangelise and proselytise without a healthy appreciation of the social sciences. And they were right.
0Unlike the ones at primary school who felt we wouldnai??i??t be able to get through life without a full grasp of ai???Sleeping Beautyai??? and ai???Little Red Riding Hoodai???.
But thatai??i??s another story.
ai???Tinker, Tailorai??? tackles the pseudo-scientific claim that people of certain cultures are ai???naturallyai??? deficient when compared to those of other cultures. Needless to say, it is non-European cultures that are allegedly inferior.
The book, small as it is – and much like the works of Fanon, Cabral and Freire – does an admirable job of dismantling this voodoo sociology.
And it is a voodoo that many people still believe in, as can be evidenced by the reactions to the shooting of an unarmed black man in Ferguson in the US fairly recently.
Jonah Birch and Paul Heideman dealt with this issue rather well in their article titled ai???The Poverty of Cultureai??? in the September 16, 2014 edition of Jacobin Magazine.
They write, in part: ai???As the sheer scale and brutality of racial inequality in the US comes, however hazily, into popular focus, conservatives across the country will, much like Zionists suddenly concerned with the fate of the Syrian uprising, suddenly evince an intense preoccupation with the lives of black Americans.
ai???We will hear how welfare has made blacks dependent on the government, has broken up the black family, and has encouraged a culture of criminality and violence (as evidenced by all that rap music).ai???
There is plenty more to quote from the article, and the space here simply does not allow for that. So by all means, those who can please try and read it in full online.
The gist is that people of colour, because they are people of colour, are somehow deficient, inferior and retarded when compared to Westerners.
The real tragedy is that this voodoo is not only peddled by Westerners, but has become internalised by people of colour.
The more affluent Africans will look down on the poor, turn up their noses and mutter ai??i?? as they sip their single malt whiskey – how ai???these buggers are indolent bums more concerned with sniffing glue, smoking mbanje and drinking the cheapest cane spirit on the market and that is why Africa will never make itai???. On the other hand, the poor African will look at his/her lot and believe all the nasty things said about him/her and resign to waiting for a Western saviour to come and save Africa from itself.
It is the old Rambo story on a continental scale!
But then sometimes you have to pause and in a self-denigrating manner ask yourself: ai???Why is Africa not developing?ai???
We are not children of lesser God, we are not intellectually inferior, we have abundant natural resources -we have it all.
Yet we still somehow fail to get the basics right.
After all, how on Earth can anyone explain why anyone in Zimbabwe is actively wishing that the recent deals signed with Russia and China should fail?
Going through some sections of the mainstream and social media, one gets the palpable feeling that there are people who are disappointed that Zimbabwe has serious partners with serious money who want to invest in the countryai??i??s development.
Why would a Zimbabwean want Zimbabwe to suffer?
Ok, there is a portion of the electorate – a minority – that does not support President Mugabe and hates Zanu-PF with every bone in their body. Should that warrant praying for failure, hoping for misery? If the Chinese and Russian deals fail, it is not President Mugabe who suffers – it is all of us: everyone alive today and those yet to be born.
Such attitudes are informed by the voodoo sociology that has taught such people that Zimbabwe will never amount to anything if it is not dealing with Europe and America.
When every energy should be devoted towards making a success of the Look East policy, we still have people pining for European and American ai???assistanceai??? as if it ever amounted to anything meaningful for our country prior to 2000.
It is when confronted by such prayers for failure that one begins, ironically, to really believe that we truly are an inferior people.
In Europe and America, when it comes to matters of common interest and development, there are no parties and there are no factions.
In Zimbabwe when it comes to national development, there is no common interest.
