CATHELINE Mahuto, a retired health care worker based in the United Kingdom, recently launched a book titled “The Super Power Of The Girl Child”.
The book, according to Mahuto, is a tool in the fight against gender inequality.
In most societies, Mahuto opines, the girl- child is not treated the same way as the boy child.
It is this inequality that prompted Mahuto to write the book.
“I wrote the book with a heavy heart. The way girls are treated in most societies is pathetic, to say the least. So, in this book, I am fighting from the child’s corner and defending her rights,” she said.
In most societies, she added, girls are being denied their rights to education and property, among others.
She urged communities to treat boys and girls equally.
“Growing up in the 1980s, boys were treated as if they were superior to girls.
“Unfortunately, some people still treat girls that way. It is sad,” said Mahuto, who is currently in Zimbabwe.
She said her life is an example of how girls, just like boys, can achieve anything.
“As I said before, girls were not fairly treated as I was growing up.
“In my case, I excelled in my academic studies and proved to the world that a girl-child can also become a family breadwinner,” she added.
She bemoaned scenarios in which families are breaking up after a wife fails to give birth to a baby boy.
“Every child is a gift from God, irrespective of gender.
“I also hate child marriages and the belief that the woman should be blamed for failing to conceive a baby boy,” Mahuto said.
