A traditional Christian chorus ‘Mhururu Kumatenga’ has positioned upcoming gospel musician Kuda Mutsvene on the lime-light.

The re-arranged song features the unmistakable voice of Mercy, his sister.

Having peaked to position three at one time on the Star FM Gospel Greats, the track is taken from the album Chirangano recorded with McDonald Chidavaenzi’s assistance.

Mutsvene, who is son to an AFM in Zimbabwe pastor, said he grew up singing the song and never thought he would record it one day.

“Choruses have a lot of meaning to my personal life. I know many people have mixed feelings on musicians who sing these types of songs. Others see it as a lack of originality. But to me music is inherent and I was gifted with a virtuous voice and the ability to compose songs.

“The Bible that our great-grandfathers used is the same that our grandfathers and our fathers read. And it contains the same message that works in different situations depending on the interpretation and inspiration one gets.

“I think people should know that ours is a ministry, if you get an inspiration you cannot say no because people will say this or that. We were called so we do the will of the one who called us,” the 21-year-old Kuwadzana bred artist said.

Mutsvene said he got inspiration to record the track in 2012 while playing instruments in his sister’s band.

“God helped me to spice it up for the appreciation of our generation,” he said.

He said featuring on the Star FM Gospel Greats charts is purely God’s providence on him as it came sooner than he expected. “I cannot find the words to explain how proud I am with the work that the Lord is doing through me. This is a pure blessing from above. I am also thankful to the public who are supporting me. I am truly humbled. My song is being played alongside gospel music gurus like Baba naMai Charamba, Pastor G, Joyous Celebration Choir and many others, that is an honour,” Mutsvene said.

Having received support from individuals like ZimPraise founder Joseph Madziyire and South Africa’s Benjamin Dube among others, Mutsvene remains indebted to them.

“My sister Mercy worked very hard for her brand and in the process she made my musical journey much easier. She laid a solid platform for me as she taught me how to mould my voice at a very tender age.

“Over and above that she practically involved me in the industry thus giving me the much needed exposure in the field.

“Magacha included me on his tours to the US and Canada last year and I learnt a lot. Mr Madziyire also gave me a chance to prove myself in the much celebrated Zimpraise Choir while the South African legend committed me into the hand of God through prayer during the Catch the Fire Conference held in 2012. I really treasure those moments,” said Mutsvene.

Mutsvene, who holds a certificate in music from the Zimbabwe College of Music, called on fellow young people to depend on God, follow their dreams and show passion if they wanted to excel.
