Sex in the bush, sex in the car, sex at a funeral, sex at the church hall. Such has become the talk of the modern day society and lead stories in the press.
Most surprisingly all this involves married individuals. Indeed ill winds have blown into the society. Is it cultural imperialism, cultural degradation or the love of money that has overtaken the pride of African marriages?
Are our marriages still sacred and are we still marrying for the correct reasons? It has become difficult to answer to such, considering today‘s marriage.
“During our youthful days, marriage was very sacred. We got married at reasonable ages compared to today‘s society and we married for the correct reasons,” narrated gogo Manokore as she fed porridge to her three-year-old granddaughter whose parents divorced in the third year of their marriage.
“A man‘s wife was supposed to be a paradigm of virtue, but sadly we cannot say the same in this day anymore,” she uttered looking unkempt, rugged and worn by life.
Sex was like washing of dirty linen in public which was rarely heard of back in the day.
Most issues were best kept under the armpits such that we, the children never knew there was any linen to wash. Marriage was very sacred and both our mothers and fathers were disciplined and discrete such that the word divorce was almost non-existent and statistically the courts dealt with very few cases.
Now it is a very different story. It has become a demon infested society where even the church leaders have become headlines. People no longer fear the commandment, church leaders themselves are getting caught on the wrong side of the commandment.
What happened to the ‘calling’, one would ask. Their eyes are now lubricated with tears of lust and their blood is warm for adultery.
Today, well respected women have defiled their marriages through extra marital affairs.
‘Ben 10s’ have become the anthem to wives of the rich figures and the elderly married women.
They lavishly transgress and desacriledge their once holy matrimony, while the man also satisfy themselves on high school and college girls as well. The world has indeed turned into a rusty pit of trash. Marriage is no longer about ‘true love’ but about how sweet the coins in one‘s pocket jingle.
Its true meaning and ancient nature have been eroded and a decayed generation has been born.
The children are suffering as a result of such marriages.
They have lost the parental guidance that should act as a pillar and example in them. Some life attributes are best learnt in following examples especially parents, which unfortunately only a few still have family time as either one both parents are out in their adventures. Maids are now playing the role of both mother and father.
Marriages have broken up and this has greatly affected the society. Moral decadence has become rampant. This has escalated in both the youths and the parents.
The youth are now in a guidance deficit and a morally decayed generation has emerged, some have resorted into drug abuse which has seen the rise in numbers of mentally ill people as a result of drug consumption.
Pass rates have declined as well and the number of street kids have relatively escalated as well.
The parents themselves, the female divorcees are venturing into prostitution because they need to sustain themselves. This has seen many being infected by such as HIV and STIs.
God himself hates divorce. Divorce yields bad effects and in just the collapse of one marriage, even the community is affected. The community begins with the family as well.
The bible says in Luke 16 verse 18 ‘whosoever putted away his wife and marrieth another, committed adultery: and whosoever married her that is put away from her husband committed adultery.
The bible has 22 verses that talk of how divorce is not accepted by God.
‘As children of God, if indeed God is our first priority then why are we casting a deaf ear to his commandment? Where has the forgiveness that was engraved in us vanished to?
One philosopher said, “If you truly love someone, you are ready to forgive them no matter what.” Today the forgiveness issues have raised a debate, it seems as if forgiveness now has conditions and is even gendered in such a way that only one sex can forgive and the other has no room for forgiveness but automatically resorts to divorce.
Just like the children of Israel, let us pray so that God delivers us from this bondage that has devoured our society. Let us pray and seek favor and his mercy.
