ZOC elections commence

The nomination process to find suitable candidates for next month’s Zimbabwe Olympic Committee elections will commence this week.

The process, which opens tomorrow and closes on April 12, is the last stop ahead of ZOC’s annual general assembly slated for April 30 in Harare.

Only National Sport Associations meeting the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee’s basic affiliation standards will be eligible to be part of the nomination process.

Anna Mguni, ZOC’s secretary general and Chief Executive Officer confirmed these developments to The Sunday Mail last week.

“To this end, notice of the ZOC General Assembly will be sent out in the week commencing 13 March 2017 and thereafter nominations must be in by the 12th of April,” she said.

“Nominations are received from the National Sport Associations that are deemed to be in good standing as per minimum membership standards,” said Mguni.

She elaborated saying one of the standard requirements for ZOC affiliates include payment of US$50 by end of this month.

“As one of the minimum membership standards, and in line with the 2016 GA (general assembly) resolution, ZOC affiliates must pay an annual affiliation fee of US$50 by 31 March 2017.

“If any national association fails to do so, their nomination will be invalidated and the association’s participation at the General Assembly will be affected.

The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee consists of six bodies that include the General Assembly, Executive Board, Executive Committee, General Secretariat, Commissions and Honorary Life Members.

This term’s race for presidency appears to be a two-horse battle between the incumbent Admire Masenda and former Zimbabwe Karate Union boss, Joe Rugwete.

Masenda will be running for a fourth term in office having taken over from Paul Chingoka in 2006.

Rugwete relinquished his duties in the Zimbabwe Karate Union in January to vie for the ZOC leadership post.

“After my resignation from the Zimbabwe Karate Union, I am taking into consideration a request by several people for me to challenge for ZOC leadership.

“I am hopeful I will grab the opportunity to be part of the association and I hope, given the chance, to give it my all,” Rugwete was quoted as saying in January.
