A jazz sensation and maestro, who has taken the South African music industry by storm, Bekezela is a highly sought-after musical act. After nine years of struggling to find his feet, Bekezela finally got signed under Muthaland Entertainment, formerly known as Ghetto Ruff Music, which has in its ranks notable stars Vusi Nova, DJ Cleo, Nathi and Nando. Q: What has inspired your name change from Bozoe to Bekezela?
A: The name change was inspired by my struggle in South Africa and the perseverance henceforth, and subsequent breakthrough. Ngibekezele ukuze ngifike la ngikhona (I persevered to get to where I am today).
Q: Is this reflective of your growth as a jazz musician?
A: Absolutely. I had to learn that the most important aspect of brand building is the storyline. Many people relate to the struggle story and are inspired to pursue their dreams.
Q: You started off at Amakhosi Theatre. How did your time there prepare you for your recently found superstardom?
A: My studies at Amakhosi gave me leverage when I entered the music industry. I learnt professionalism, technical abilities and to really expand beyond the horizon.
Q: You recently collaborated with musician Ntando and launched a new song. What is the significance and inspiration of the song?
A: The Song Amanzi is a composition of mine and I feature the legendary Ntando, who has played a brotherly role in my professional and social life. There is an old Ndebele proverb which when loosely translated reads; “where water once stood, it shall stand there once more”, that’s what the song is about.
