ZAMBIA has appointed Vice President Guy Scott as interim leader following the death of President Michael Sata at a London hospital on Tuesday night.

Scott will serve as Head of State until the country holds an election within 90 days. He becomes the first white head of a democratic government in Africa.

Secretary to the Cabinet Roland Msiska announced that President Sata died on Tuesday night at 23:11 hours Zambian time.

He said his wife Dr Christine Kaseba and his son who is also Lusaka Mayor Mulenga Sata and others were by his bedside at the time of his passing.

Defense Minister Edgar Lungu confirmed Scott’s appointment on Wednesday.

“Dr Scott will act as president of the Republic of Zambia until the country goes for a presidential by election,” he said.

Mr Scott also confirmed the news to British newspaper, The Telegraph: “I am the acting president at the moment. It has just been passed by cabinet.”

President Sata succumbed to an undisclosed illness while receiving treatment at King Edward VII Hospital in the British capital.

Zambian authorities are yet to reveal when his body will be repatriated to the southern African nation.

In June, President Sata disappeared from the public eye without explanation and was then reported to be getting medical treatment in Israel.

Later in September, he missed a scheduled speech at the United Nations General Assembly after falling ill in his New York hotel.

President Sata left Zambia on October 20 for medical checkup in London accompanied by his wife and other family members.

He was born on July 6, 1937, and became Zambia’s fifth President on September 23, 2011.

President Sata is the second Zambian leader to die in office after Levy Mwanawasa in 2008.
