At least two million out of a total 4,5 million youths in the economically active age group in Zimbabwe are now into professional agriculture and making a living out of farming.

The country classifies youths as those aged between 15 and 34.

According to a latest study, the total number of youths aged between 15 and 24 years is 2.6 million while 4,5 million are aged between 15 and 34.

“Among the youth aged 15 – 34 years, a total of 3.4 million were employed and most of them (61.4 percent) were skilled Agricultural, forestry and fishery workers.” reads part of the ZimStat Labour Survey 2014.

“Out of the economically active youths, 52.6 percent were male and 47.4 percent were female.

The survey shows that 16.4 of youths were economically inactive and these were mostly students.

The highest number of economically active youths was in Manicaland Province with 254 000 while Bulawayo had the least with 50 000.

Youths in Zimbabwe have been struggling to secure formal employment due to massive company closures that have rocked the country in the past few years.

Since the launch of the fast track land reform exercise in 2000, farming has become a lucrative business sector that has continued to grow each year.
