First Lady Amai Grace Mugabe was yesterday formally appointed Zanu-PF Secretary for Women’s Affairs following her unanimous nomination to the post.

President Mugabe confirmed the appointment to rapturous cheers from the thousands of delegates at Zanu-PF’s 6th National Congress in Harare.

Amai Mugabe takes over from Cde Oppah Muchinguri, who actively campaigned for the First Lady to take over the post.

Her elevation mirrors that of late national hero Amai Sally Mugabe, who as First Lady, also led the influential Women’s League.

In her acceptance speech, Amai Mugabe said: “I am extremely humbled and acknowledge this appointment. I, therefore, would like to express my gratitude to the President for approving my nomination and, secondly, for appointing me today.

“Thank you Cde President for the opportunity you have given me to lead the women. I wish to assure you that I shall truly, faithfully and unequivocally lead the women of this party without fear and favour.”

She went on: “I am assured by the overwhelming support that I have as I accept this appointment. I was touched by the resounding support I got from the people during my Meet the People tours, especially the youths who accompanied me . . . ndinoti pamberi nema youths.

“This appointment is for all of you, you worked for it and you deserve it. Ndoda kukutendai nezvamakaita nekundisimudzira, ndichashanda nesimba rangu pandinogonera. I come into office at a time factionalism had ravaged the party and I intend to strengthen the Women’s League.”

The Women’s League boss said she owed her elevation to Cde Muchinguri, whom she described as a true party cadre.

“As I accept this appointment, it would not be ideal if I do not mention one person, she is none other Cde Muchinguri. I salute her for her gesture.

“She is a shining example of a true revolutionary, freedom fighter and party cadre who puts the interests of the party ahead of herself.

“Vamwe havana kufara nazvo . . . kasi handisi ini ndatanga kuva First Lady pachigaro ichi. Tinoziva tese kuti the late First Lady, Amai Sally Mugabe, vakambenge varipo pachigaro ichi. Saka hazvisi zvitsva.”

Amai Mugabe is a successful dairy farmer who is also renowned for her philanthropy that has seen her establish Amai Grace Mugabe Children’s Home in Mazowe, is also the patron of Danhiko Project.

Amai Mugabe has assisted numerous young Zimbabweans from less-fortunate backgrounds, who have gone on to become recognised professionals.

In July, the Women’s League nominated her to lead as Cde Muchinguri offered to step down citing intimidation by factionalists.

Her nomination attracted a groundswell of support across the country and yesterday’s affirmation to the position formalised the inevitable appointment.
