If the wild cheers whenever President Mugabe’s name was mentioned at the inaguration of Namibian President Hage Geingob are anything to go by, then Africa just cannot get enough of him.

Thousands of Namibians and other foreign dignitaries cheered as President Mugabe arrived at the Independence Stadium.

The inauguration was held concurrently with Namibia’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.

Whenever President Mugabe appeared on the big television screens that were mounted around the stadium, the cheers grew wild.

The outgoing Namibian leader, Pohamba, introduced the President saying:

“I have enjoyed support from my brothers and sisters in Sadc and I am happy to see our chairman here who is also the chairman of the AU.

“I am referring here to none other than President Mugabe of the Republic of Zimbabwe.”

The crowd cheered and the applause grew louder when President Geingob acknowledged the presence of President Mugabe in his acceptance speech.

President Pohamba told the crowd that he was leaving the presidency a satisfied man.

“As I leave office, there is one title I will carry with pride, that of being an ordinary citizen and former president.

‘‘Let’s give full support to the incoming President. He is more than equal to the task,” said Cde Pohamba. President Geingob in his acceptance speech said: “This is the day the Lord has made and we should rejoice.”

He promised to serve all Namibians without exception. President Geingob described Namibia as “the child of international solidarity”, adding that he will work smoothly with both Sadc and AU. The inauguration and silver jubilee celebrations were attended by several heads of state and government.
