A Karoi man who went on the run last year after he had allegedly ripped open his wife’s two cheeks during a domestic dispute is now behind bars after the wife successfully lured him back home to celebrate Christmas.

It is alleged that Maxwell Vhakacha (43), who accused his wife of luring men through her charming smiles, attacked the woman in a bid to “widen her mouth”, ironically suggesting that she would smile in a better way to lure more men.

Since then, Vhakacha went on the run until his wife sweet-talked him into coming back home for Christmas from Beitbridge where he had sought refuge.

While enjoying sumptuous food with his wife Annastancia Dhlamini (38), the unsuspecting Vhakacha was arrested at number 1528 Chikangwe high-density suburb after Dlamini alerted the police through a mobile phone text message.

He has since appeared before Karoi magistrate Mr Sam Chitumwa facing attempted murder charges.

Mr Chitumwa advised him to apply for bail at the High Court before he was remanded in custody to January 12 this year.

The court heard that Vhakacha attacked his wife with a knife on November 10 last year after he accused her of having an affair with their neighbour, Pfungwa Spox Kaharo.

He allegedly ripped open her mouth towards the ears. During the scuffle, Dhlamini also sustained a deep cut on her palm.

Mr Webster Dimingo prosecuted.
