Water purification tips

Boiling
Granular-activated carbon filtering (absorbs toxin compounds)
Distillation — involves boiling water to vaporise solutes, leaving the water clean.
Reverse osmosis —involves applying mechanical pressure to an impure solution, forcing pure water through a semi-permeable membrane.
Experts recommend the following:
In-house testing laboratories for councils.
That test results be audited independently and publicised to ensure they reflect the correct picture on the ground and that councils do not tamper with findings.

That councils adopt modern and scientifically sound water testing methods as chlorination does not remove harmful substances like metals.

Dealing with leaking pipes
Urban planning expert Mr Percy Toriro says Harare City Council should invest in computerised water distribution systems that keep track of underground infrastructure.

He also said Kunzvi Dam construction should be expedited so as to ease the water shortages in the capital.
“Council must invest in a computerised digital system, which manages the land map of the water infrastructure,” said Mr Toriro.
