THE UZ Wolves have successfully defended their ladies National Volleyball League title, to add yet another accolade to their already colourful cabinet.

Wolves mauled ZRP Harare Province 3-0 in the title decider last weekend.

“We feel we are on top of the world, we are surely having the best time. This year has been our best because we have won everything on offer,” enthused Wolves coach Jonathan Gava.

Wolves are the reigning Zimbabwe Open champions.

The Harare Open title is theirs too.

The defence of the national league title was code named “Operation Voltron.”

“The preparation was not easy, the technical team spent hours devising a plan that would ensure victory for the team,” revealed Gava.

“We developed a 14-day plan dubbed Operation Voltron, this required players to train daily, weekends included. They went through gruelling physical conditioning, tactical and technical training as well as psychological preparation, amongst others.”

In the college games, UZ Wolves have been dominant, too, and Gava is hoping to extend that form onto the international stage.

They displayed commendable quality at their maiden appearance at the Zone Six Championship, reaching the semi-finals in Botswana last year.

“In terms of domestic volleyball we have done well so far, winning everything this year. We would like to maintain that.

“On the international arena for tertiary institutions we have managed to be number one in Southern Africa, we want to go a step further.

“We have been promised that we will play in the World University Games in Korea next year and we want to leave a mark there as well,” declared Gava, who joined the Wolves two years ago.

The coach is grateful for the continued support of UZ Vice-Chancellor Levi Nyagura.

“The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Levi Nyagura, is very supportive. He always wants to see the team excelling. Our major challenge on the international stage is the equipment used . . . especially the courts, we need to upgrade our courts to match regional and international standards and we hope Prof Nyagura will assist us usual,” he said.

Despite sweeping everything on offer, Gava and his ladies are hungry for more.

“Winning is never enough, we want to continue winning. We know that after winning the national league again pressure will be on us, but that does not scare us, we have to raise our game even higher.

“The girls are hungry for more success and are willing to do all it takes and as a coach nothing beats having players who are talented as well as self motivated,” said Gava.
