The Zimbabwe Volleyball Association has hailed Support Unit for reaching the finals of last week’s Confederation of African Volleyball Region V Club Championship Games in Maputo, Mozambique.

The men’s team, which became the first Zimbabwean side to reach the finals of this competition since the Bulldogs class of 2007, however, lost 0-3 (22-25, 21-25, 19-25) to three-time champions Autoridade de Tributaria of Mozambique.

The local volleyball governing body’s president Frederick Ndlovu lauded the policemen for making the nation proud in Mozambique.

“These are the fruits of hard work and determination. This achievement is not by fluke,” said Ndlovu, who is also the secretary-general of the region’s volleyball body.

He complimented Support Unit’s organisation and consistency in its volleyball programs.

“They made an investment into a level 3 coach, who is the highest qualified in the country, continued participation in the National League, SAPCO Games and the Region V Club Championships. The team presentation is excellent from officials to players. Amhlope, makorokoto to them,” said Ndlovu.

Also impressive were debutantes Non Academic Bachelors Association (NABA), who reached the quarter finals.

Ndlovu described NABA, who were on course to meet Support Unit in the semi-finals had they beaten University of Zambia, as “excellent”. “They played with no pressure on them, hence performed very well,” said the ZVA boss.

However, it was gloomy for the Zimbabwean ladies team UZ Wolves and Support Unit, who both crashed out in the group stages without winning a match.

Meanwhile, ZRP Officer Leonard Gaize, one of Zimbabwe’s two international referees has been elected to be the head referee for the All Africa Games qualifiers next year.
