VID to auction 400 impounded cars

At least 400 impounded vehicles worth over US$1,5 million, which have been abandoned at various Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) depots across the country, are set to go under the hammer, the Government has announced.

According to a recent Government Gazette, 401 motor vehicles that include motorcycles, station wagons, sedans, minibuses and  haulage trucks will be sold if their owners do not claim them by July 30.

“It is hereby notified, in terms of section 3(8) of the Roads and Roads Traffic (Rules of the Road) Regulations, 1974, published in Government Notice 308 of 1974, that if the motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts, particulars of which are given in the Schedule, are not claimed and removed from the Vehicle Inspection Department depots on or before 30th of July, 2014, they will be sold by public auction,” reads a statement released by the Permanent Secretary for Transport and Infrastructural Development, Mr Munesu Munodawafa.

The vehicles are kept at Beitbridge, Belvedere (Harare), Bindura, Bulawayo, Chinhoyi, Chiredzi, Chitungwiza, Eastlea (Harare), Gweru, Kadoma, Kwekwe, Masvingo, Plumtree and Zvishavane depots while the names and addresses of the owners remain unknown. Most of the abandoned vehicles include luxurious BMWs, Chevrolets and Mercedes-Benzes.

Harare’s two depots, Belvedere and Eastlea, have the largest fleet with 102 followed by Bulawayo where 98 have been abandoned.

Masvingo has 41 vehicles in its yard, Gweru 30, Chitungwiza 26, while the border towns of Beitbridge and Plumtree have a combined 16.
